Islamic Baby Names by Date of Birth (Ilm-e-Adad)

Many parents search for Islamic baby names according to date of birth. In this tradition the date of birth gives the baby's star sign (burj), and a name's burj is worked out by ilm-e-adad (the Abjad number system). Families then look for a name whose burj matches the birth burj.

How the burj of a name is worked out

Step 1: Write the name in Urdu and add the Abjad value of each letter.
Step 2: Divide the total by 12.
Step 3: The remainder gives the burj: 1 Hamal (Aries), 2 Saur (Taurus) … 11 Dalw (Aquarius), 0 Hoot (Pisces).

Example: Muhammad (محمد): م 40 + ح 8 + م 40 + د 4 = 92.
92 ÷ 12 = 7, remainder 8 → Aqrab (Scorpio).

Please note: choosing a name by date of birth, star sign or numbers is a cultural practice. There is no instruction in the Quran or the authentic Sunnah to choose a name this way. What the Sunnah teaches is to give a name with a good meaning, and any good name is fine whatever the date of birth.

How to Choose a Good Islamic Name

  • Choose a good meaning. The Prophet ﷺ changed names with a bad meaning. He changed the name 'Asiyah (disobedient) to Jamilah (beautiful) (Sahih Muslim 2139).
  • Names of servitude to Allah are the most beloved. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved of your names to Allah are 'Abdullah and 'Abdur-Rahman" (Sahih Muslim 2132).
  • Names of the Prophets and the Companions, such as Muhammad, Ibrahim, Musa, Maryam, Khadijah and Fatimah, carry a noble history.
  • Avoid names that belong to Allah alone, such as Ar-Rahman or Al-Khaliq, and names of servitude to anyone other than Allah.
  • Keep it easy to say for your family and community, and check how it sounds with the father's name using the full name checker.

When Should a Baby Be Named?

Both are reported in authentic hadith: the Prophet ﷺ named his son Ibrahim on the night he was born (Sahih Muslim 2315), and he taught that a child is named on the seventh day, when the Aqiqah is performed (Sunan Abi Dawud 2838, Jami at-Tirmidhi 1522). Enter the date of birth in our Islamic Age Calculator to see the Aqiqah day in both calendars, or use the Hijri Date Converter to convert any date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find an Islamic name for my baby?

Use the Islamic names finder above: browse names by first letter or gender, search by meaning in English or Urdu, or ask the AI for ideas. Tap the heart to save names, then send your shortlist to family on WhatsApp so they can pick their favourites.

Can I choose a Muslim name according to date of birth?

Many families look up names by date of birth or star sign (burj). This is a cultural practice; there is no instruction in the Quran or the authentic Sunnah to choose a name this way. You are free to choose any name with a good meaning, whatever the date of birth.

How is the burj (star sign) of a name calculated?

By ilm-e-adad: add the Abjad value of each letter of the name as it is written in Urdu, divide the total by 12 and look at the remainder. A remainder of 1 is Hamal (Aries), 2 is Saur (Taurus) and so on; a remainder of 0 is Hoot (Pisces). For example, محمد = 92, and 92 ÷ 12 leaves 8, which is Aqrab (Scorpio).

What are the most beloved names in Islam?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved of your names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman" (Sahih Muslim 2132). Names of the Prophets, such as Ibrahim, Musa and Yusuf, and of the Companions are also popular choices.

Which names should Muslims avoid?

Avoid names that make a person the servant of anyone other than Allah, names that belong to Allah alone (such as Ar-Rahman or Al-Khaliq), and names with a bad or gloomy meaning. The Prophet ﷺ changed names with bad meanings to good ones.

When should a baby be named in Islam?

Both are reported in authentic hadith: naming on the day of birth, and naming on the seventh day together with the Aqiqah.

Are the AI name suggestions reliable?

The AI suggestions are a starting point and can contain mistakes. Always confirm the meaning and spelling of a name with an Imam, a qualified teacher or a trusted name dictionary before you decide.
