🌙 marks the evening when an odd night of the last ten begins. Expected dates are based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. The start and end depend on the moon sighting; change the start day in Calculation settings if your mosque announces a different date. Times are calculated for London with the Moonsighting Committee (UK, North America) method. Local mosques may differ by a few minutes; for the exact time follow your local mosque. In summer at high latitudes, Fajr and Isha use the Seventh of the night rule.
🌅 Intention for the fast (Sehri)
No special dua for starting the fast is reported in the authentic hadith. What counts is the intention (niyyah) in the heart, made before Fajr, and getting up for sehri in order to fast is itself the intention. Many families also say this sentence:
وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ
Wa bi-sawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan
“I intend to keep tomorrow’s fast of Ramadan.”
Source: the intention before dawn is required by the hadith of Hafsah (Sunan Abi Dawud 2454, graded sahih by al-Albani). The sentence above is not from a hadith; Darul Uloom Deoband says saying it is permissible, but not required.
🤲 Dua for breaking the fast (Iftar)
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Dhahaba al-zama’u wabtallat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajru in sha Allah
“The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills.”
Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 2357 (Ibn Umar), graded hasan by al-Albani. The Prophet ﷺ said this when he broke his fast.
The well-known “Allahumma laka sumtu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu” is in Sunan Abi Dawud 2358, but its chain is mursal (weak), so the dua above is the stronger one.
Ramadan 2027 Key Dates
Expected dates based on the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. The actual dates depend on the moon sighting, so in countries that follow their own sighting they may be a day later.
| Event | Expected date |
|---|---|
| First Taraweeh prayer | Sunday 7 February 2027 (night) |
| First fast (1 Ramadan 1448) | Monday 8 February 2027 |
| Last ten nights begin (21st night) | Saturday 27 February 2027 (evening) |
| 27th night (Laylat al-Qadr is sought in the odd nights) | Friday 5 March 2027 (evening) |
| Last fast | Monday 8 March 2027 (29 days) or Tuesday 9 March 2027 (30 days) |
| Eid al-Fitr | Tuesday 9 March 2027 (Umm al-Qura) or Wednesday 10 March 2027 (local sighting) |
Astronomers expect the Shawwal crescent not to be visible anywhere on the evening of 8 March 2027. Mosques that follow the Saudi Umm al-Qura calendar are likely to celebrate Eid on Tuesday 9 March, while those that follow a local sighting are likely to complete 30 fasts and celebrate on Wednesday 10 March. Follow your local mosque.
Sehri and Iftar Times Explained
Sehri (suhoor) is the meal before dawn. You must stop eating and drinking when Fajr begins, so the "Sehri ends" time is the start of Fajr. Many families stop a few minutes earlier for safety; you can add a 5 or 10 minute margin under Calculation settings. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Take sahur, for in sahur there is blessing" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1923, Sahih Muslim 1095).
Iftar is at Maghrib, as soon as the sun has set. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The people will remain upon good as long as they hasten to break the fast" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1957, Sahih Muslim 1098).

Duas for Keeping and Breaking the Fast (Verified)
We checked both duas against the hadith collections, so you know exactly what is from the Sunnah and what is a common practice.
Intention for the Fast at Sehri
No special dua for beginning the fast is reported in the authentic hadith. What is required is the intention (niyyah) in the heart, made before Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ said: "He who does not determine to fast before dawn does not fast" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2454, graded sahih by al-Albani). Getting up for sehri in order to fast is itself the intention.
Many families also say this sentence at sehri:
وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ
Wa bi-sawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan
"I intend to keep tomorrow's fast of Ramadan."
This sentence is not from a hadith. Hanafi scholars at Darul Uloom Deoband say it is permissible, and good, to say it, but the fast is valid with the intention in the heart alone.
Dua for Breaking the Fast at Iftar
Abdullah ibn Umar reported that when the Prophet ﷺ broke his fast, he said:
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Dhahaba al-zama'u wabtallat al-'urooq wa thabata al-ajru in sha Allah
"The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills."
Sunan Abi Dawud 2357, graded hasan (sound) by al-Albani. The well-known dua "Allahumma laka sumtu wa 'ala rizqika aftartu" ("O Allah, for You I fasted and with Your provision I break my fast") is in Sunan Abi Dawud 2358, but its chain is mursal and al-Albani graded it weak, so the dua above is the more authentic one.

Who Does Not Have to Fast?
Allah says fasting is prescribed for every adult Muslim who is able, and that "whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days" (Quran 2:184–185). Travellers and people who are ill may make up the fasts later. Those who cannot fast at all because of old age or a lasting illness give fidyah instead. Pregnant and breastfeeding women who fear for themselves or their baby may also postpone. Please ask a qualified scholar about your own situation.
