Who these classes are for

Complete beginners

You have never learned to read Arabic, or you only remember a few letters from childhood.

New Muslims

You want to read Al-Fatihah and the surahs for Salah correctly, with a patient teacher.

Readers without Tajweed

You can read, but want to fix pronunciation and recite properly.

Busy adults

Work, study or family leave no time for a class at the mosque. Learn from home at a time that suits you.

Why adults learn better one-to-one

Many adults put off learning because they feel embarrassed to start from the beginning in front of others. In a private one-to-one class there is no one else listening, so you can ask anything and repeat a sound as many times as you need.

  • Your own pace. The teacher moves on when you are ready, not when a group is.
  • Your own schedule. Lunchtime, evenings or weekends.
  • The same teacher who knows your strengths and the mistakes you tend to make.
  • Sisters can learn with a female teacher. More about this.

Your learning path

  1. Arabic letters and soundsLearn each letter and its correct sound. Our free Arabic alphabet with sound lets you practise between classes.
  2. Noorani QaidaJoin letters, read vowels, tanween, sukoon, shaddah and long vowels. Adults often finish this stage in a few months.
  3. Reading the QuranStart with the short surahs you recite in Salah, then read from the mushaf with your teacher correcting you.
  4. TajweedApply the rules of recitation properly. See our online Tajweed course.
  5. MeaningAdd word-by-word translation so you understand what you recite, with translation and tafseer classes.

How long does it take an adult to learn to read the Quran?

It depends on where you start, how many classes you take and how much you practise. With three classes a week and 10 to 15 minutes of daily practice, this is a realistic guide:

Starting pointFirst goalRough timeframe
Cannot read Arabic lettersRead the Quran slowly but correctlyAbout 3 to 6 months
Can read slowly, many mistakesRead smoothly with core Tajweed rulesAbout 3 to 6 months
Read fluently alreadyPolish Tajweed and recitationOngoing, at your pace

These are typical ranges, not promises. Five classes a week is faster; two a week takes longer.

If you are new to Islam

Welcome. Most new Muslims start with Surah Al-Fatihah and two or three short surahs so they can pray, while learning the Arabic letters properly alongside. Transliteration can help for the first few weeks, but reading the Arabic script is more accurate and quicker than most people expect.

Your teacher can also go through how to pray, the meaning of what you recite and the basic duas, at a pace that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to learn the Quran as an adult?

No. Adults of every age learn to read the Quran, including students in their sixties and seventies. Adults often progress faster than children because they can practise on their own and understand the rules.

Can I learn to read the Quran if I do not know any Arabic?

Yes. You start with the Arabic letters and their sounds, then learn to join them. You do not need to speak Arabic to read the Quran correctly; understanding the meaning is a separate step you can add later.

Do adults also need to study the Noorani Qaida?

If you cannot yet read Arabic letters fluently, yes. It is the quickest way to read correctly. Adults usually move through it much faster than children.

Can I have classes in the evening or at weekends?

Yes. You choose the days and times that suit you, including evenings and weekends.

I am a sister. Can I learn with a female teacher?

Yes. We have experienced female teachers for female students. See classes with a female Quran teacher.

How much are the classes?

£29 a month for 2 days a week, £39 for 3 days or £49 for 5 days. Each class is 30 minutes, one to one.
