Welcome to Madni Qaida in English Page 05 at Learning Quraan. This page teaches the du’a to recite before studying a religious book or Islamic lesson, Allahumma-ftah ‘alayna hikmataka…, with its English translation and reference. It also has space for the student’s name, class and madrasah.
This page is part of the opening pages of the book. See every page on the Madni Qaida in English index, or learn with a teacher in our online Quran courses.
What is on Madni Qaida in English Page 05?
- The du’a asking Allah to open the doors of knowledge and wisdom, with its meaning.
- The advice to recite Salat upon the Prophet ﷺ once before and after the du’a.
- A student details box to personalise the learner’s own copy.
How to Practise This Page
- Read the opening pages once with your child before starting Lesson 1, so they know what the book is for.
- Keep the Makharij chart and the articulation diagram nearby: you will come back to them in almost every lesson.
- Recite the du’a for study and Salat upon the Prophet ﷺ before each class to build a good routine.
The Du‘a Before Studying
The book opens with a du‘a to recite before studying a religious book or an Islamic lesson, with Salat upon the Holy Prophet ﷺ once before and once after it. The book cites it from al-Mustatraf, vol. 1, p. 40.
اَللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ عَلَيْنَا حِكْمَتَكَ وَانْشُرْ عَلَيْنَا رَحْمَتَكَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْاِكْرَامِ
In our own words, it asks: “O Allah, open Your wisdom to us and spread Your mercy over us, O Possessor of majesty and honour.”
Reading It Correctly
The du‘a is a good first practice in joining words. Points to watch:
| Word | What to watch |
|---|---|
| اَللّٰهُمَّ | The Lam of Allah is thick here; Meem with Tashdeed takes Ghunnah. |
| افْتَحْ | Joined to the word before, the first Alif is not read: “allaahummaf-taḥ”. |
| حِكْمَتَكَ | Ḥa from the middle of the throat. |
| وَانْشُرْ | Again the Alif is not read when joining; the Noon before Sheen is hidden (Ikhfa). |
| رَحْمَتَكَ | Ḥa, then a clear Meem. |
| يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ | Two Madds of two counts; the Lam of “al-jalaal” is read. |
These rules are taught later in the book: Hamzah Wasli and joining in Lesson 20 and Lesson 21, and Ikhfa in Lesson 12. Until then, a child can learn the du‘a by listening and repeating.
The Madani Aim and the Name Card
Below the du‘a the page gives Dawat-e-Islami’s Madani aim: “I must strive to reform myself and people of the entire world.” The box at the bottom is for the learner’s details: name, Madrasah, class, address and phone number. Filling it in on the first day gives a child a sense that this book is theirs.
Source: the page shown above is from the Madani Qa‘idah (English edition), front matter, book page iii, published by Maktaba-tul-Madinah (Dawat-e-Islami). The book gives the du‘a’s source as al-Mustatraf, vol. 1, p. 40; the explanation of its meaning is ours. Notes written by Learning Quraan.
