What Madd is and its two causes

Madd means stretching. A long Madd has only two causes: a Hamzah or a Sukoon after the Letter of Maddah or Leen. From these come six types: Muttasil, Munfasil, Lazim, Leen Lazim, ‘Aarid and Leen ‘Aarid. Back to Lesson 17 (page 48).

Madd Muttasil and Munfasil

A Hamzah after a Letter of Maddah in the same word is Muttasil (جَآءَ); in the next word it is Munfasil (فِيْٓ اَنْفُسِكُمْ). Both are stretched 2 or 2½ Alif (4 or 5 counts). Keep one length throughout a recitation. Back to Lesson 17 (page 48).

Madd Lazim and Leen Lazim

An original Sukoon or Tashdeed after a Letter of Maddah gives Madd Lazim (جَآنٌّ); after a Letter of Leen it gives Leen Lazim (عٓ). Both are stretched 3 Alif (6 counts), the longest Madd. Back to Lesson 17 (page 48).

The answer to question 43 (temporary Kasrah) begins at the top of this page; see the explanation on page 67.
