Sixty Words for Lesson 16
Page 47 is the practice page for Tafkheem and Tarqeeq. The first two rows test Alif, the next three test Lam, and the last five test Ra. Grouped by the rule each word practises:
| Rule | Words from this page |
|---|---|
| Alif after a thick letter (thick) | قَالَ سِرَاجًا طَالِبُ صِرَاطَ (Surah al-Fatihah 1:7) خَالِدًا (Surah an-Nisa 4:14) غَاسِقٍ (Surah al-Falaq 113:3) |
| Alif after a thin letter (thin) | كَانَ مَالًا مَفَازًا (Surah an-Naba 78:31) تَابُوْا عَابِدٌ |
(Surah al-Anfal 8:32) |
| Lam of Allah, thin | لِلّٰهِ (Surah al-Fatihah 1:2) بِاللّٰهِ بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ (Surah al-Fatihah 1:1) قُلِ اللّٰهُمَّ (Surah Al ‘Imran 3:26) |
| Other Lams (always thin) |
The Small Circles in the Last Row
The last two words, خَيْرٌ and نَذِيْرٌ, are followed by a small circle, the sign of stopping at the end of a verse. When you stop, the Tanween drops and the Ra becomes Saakin; with a Ya Saakin before it, the Ra is read thin: “khayr”, “nadheer”. Read without stopping, the same words would have a thick Ra.
Mistakes to Watch For
- Treating every Alif the same. غَاسِقٍ has a thick Alif; عَابِدٌ a thin one.
- Thick Lam in لِلّٰهِ. After a Kasrah, the Lam of Allah is thin.
- Thin Ra after a temporary Kasrah. اِرْجِعُوْا and اِرْكَعُوْا keep a thick Ra.
- Missing the heavy-letter exception. فِرْقَةٍ and مِرْصَادٍ have a thick Ra.
A Five-Minute Practice Plan
- Minute 1: rows 1 and 2: thick or thin Alif.
- Minute 2: rows 3 to 5: the Lam of Allah and other Lams.
