Welcome to Madni Qaida in English Page 53 at Learning Quraan. This page shows the four places of Saktah, four words where Saad has a small Seen written on it, and introduces Tasheel and Imalah.
This page is part of Lesson 20: Miscellaneous Rules. See every page on the Madni Qaida in English index, or learn with a teacher in our online Quran courses.
What is on Madni Qaida in English Page 53?
- The four Saktah places, with references from Al-Kahf, Yaseen, Al-Mutaffifeen and Al-Qiyamah.
- How to read the four Saad-with-Seen words.
- Imalah in مجريها and the special reading of بئس الاسم الفسوق.
How to Practise This Page
- Izhar Mutlaq: no Ghunnah in the four words dunya, bunyan, sinwan, qinwan.
- Saktah: stop the sound without taking a breath in the four marked places.
- Learn the special cases (Saad with a small Seen, Tasheel, Imalah) with their verse references.
The Four Places of Saktah
The top row shows the four places where Saktah (a short pause holding the breath, explained on page 52) is required. Each is marked with the word “Saktah” over the pause:
| Where to pause | Where it occurs |
|---|---|
| وَقِيْلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍ | Surah al-Qiyamah 75:27 |
| كَلَّا بَلْ ۜ رَانَ | Surah al-Mutaffifin 83:14 |
| مِنْ مَّرْقَدِنَا ۜ هٰذَا | Surah Ya-Sin 36:52 |
| عِوَجًا ۜ قَيِّمًا | Surah al-Kahf 18:1–2 |
In عِوَجًا ۜ قَيِّمًا the Tanween turns into an Alif at the pause (“‘iwajaa”), then reading continues. In مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍ and بَلْ ۜ رَانَ the pause keeps the Noon and the Lam from merging into the Ra.
Ṣad With a Small Seen
Four words in the Quran are written with a ص that has a small س above it. The page gives the reading for each:
| Word | Where it occurs | Read with |
|---|---|---|
| يَبْصُۜطُ | Surah al-Baqarah 2:245 | Seen only |
| بَصْۜطَةً | Surah al-A‘raf 7:69 | Seen only |
| الْمُصَۜيْطِرُوْنَ | Surah at-Tur 52:37 | Either Ṣad or Seen |
| بِمُصَيْطِرٍ | Surah al-Ghashiyah 88:22 | Ṣad only |
Three More Special Readings
- Tasheel means softening: the second of two Hamzahs is said gently, between a Hamzah and an Alif. There is only one word in the Quran where Tasheel is required; it appears on the next page.
- Imalah means leaning a Fathah towards a Kasrah, and an Alif towards a Ya. The Ra of Imalah is said like the Urdu “re” (رے) instead of “ra”. The page spells it: Meem, Jeem, Zabar: “maj”; Ra of Imalah: “re”; Ha, Alif, Zabar: “haa”, giving “majrehaa”.
- بِئْسَ الِاسْمُ الْفُسُوْقُ: in this phrase neither the Alif before the Lam nor the Alif after it is read; the Lam takes a Kasrah: “bi’sa-lismul-fusooq”.
Mistakes to Watch For
- Taking a breath at Saktah. Only the sound stops.
- Reading يَبْصُۜطُ with Ṣad. It is read with Seen.
- Reading the Ra of Imalah as “ree” or “raa”. It is “re”.
A Five-Minute Practice Plan
- Minute 1: the four Saktah places, holding the breath.
- Minute 2: the four Ṣad and Seen words with their readings.
- Minute 3: spell “majrehaa” the book’s way.
- Minute 4: read بِئْسَ الِاسْمُ الْفُسُوْقُ slowly, then at normal pace.
- Minute 5: read the Check Yourself line below.
