- Words with Hamzah Saakinah such as مؤمنين and يؤمنون.
- Longer words such as يستبدل and يستفتحون.
How to Practise This Page
- Join a Saakin letter to the moving letter before it.
- Stop the sound sharply on Hamzah Saakinah.
- Let the five Qalqalah letters (qutbu jad) bounce clearly when they are Saakin.
The Rest of the Lesson 11 Exercise
Page 34 finishes Lesson 11 with thirty more words. Every one has at least one Saakin letter, and most bring in Qalqalah or a Hamzah Saakinah. Grouped by what they practise:
| What to practise | Words from this page |
|---|---|
| Qalqalah inside a word | يُقْرِضُ yuq-ri-ḍu تَجْرِيْ taj-ree يَبْحَثُ yab-ḥa-thu يَسْتَبْدِلْ yas-tab-dil |
| Qalqalah at the end | اِذْهَبْ idh-hab اُشْدُدْ ush-dud اِرْكَبْ ir-kab |
| Saakin Ta at the end | طُمِسَتْ ṭu-mi-sat فُرِجَتْ fu-ri-jat نُسِفَتْ nu-si-fat حُشِرَتْ ḥu-shi-rat نُشِرَتْ nu-shi-rat اَحْضَرَتْ aḥ-ḍa-rat |
| Leen and Sukoon together | بَيْنَكُمْ bay-na-kum بَيْنَهُمْ bay-na-hum عَلَيْهِمْ ‘a-lay-him اَيْدِيْهِمْ ay-dee-him |
| Long words | اَعْمَالَهُمْ a‘-maa-la-hum اَعْمَالَكُمْ a‘-maa-la-kum يَسْتَفْتِحُوْنَ yas-taf-ti-ḥoo-na |
Hamzah Saakinah in Real Words
This page gives Hamzah Saakinah its first real workout. It is written in different ways: on a Waw in مُؤْمِنُوْنَ, on a Ya seat in بِئْسَ, and on an Alif in اِقْرَاْ and شَاْنٌ. Whatever its seat, it is read the same way: a clean, sudden stop in the throat, as the rule on page 31 says. The green colour marks it in every box.
Six Words from Two Surahs
The Saakin-Ta words come in two sets from consecutive verses: طُمِسَتْ, فُرِجَتْ, نُسِفَتْ from Surah al-Mursalat, and حُشِرَتْ, نُشِرَتْ, اَحْضَرَتْ from Surah at-Takwir. Places where these and other words on the page occur:
| Word | Where it occurs |
|---|---|
| طُمِسَتْ | Surah al-Mursalat 77:8 |
| فُرِجَتْ | Surah al-Mursalat 77:9 |
| نُسِفَتْ | Surah al-Mursalat 77:10 |
| حُشِرَتْ | Surah at-Takwir 81:5 |
| نُشِرَتْ | Surah at-Takwir 81:10 |
| اَحْضَرَتْ | Surah at-Takwir 81:14 |
| مُؤْصَدَةٌ | Surah al-Humazah 104:8 |
| اِقْرَاْ | Surah al-‘Alaq 96:1 |
| يُؤْمِنُوْنَ | Surah al-Baqarah 2:3 |
| يُقْرِضُ | Surah al-Baqarah 2:245 |
| فَتْحٌ | Surah as-Saff 61:13 |
| جَمْعًا | Surah al-‘Adiyat 100:5 |
| اُشْدُدْ | Surah Ta-Ha 20:31 |
| يَسْتَبْدِلْ | Surah Muhammad 47:38 |
| يَسْتَفْتِحُوْنَ | Surah al-Baqarah 2:89 |
Inside a verse a word can join the next one, and later rules can change how it sounds. Here each word is read on its own, as written.
Mistakes to Watch For
- A soft Hamzah. مُؤْمِنُوْنَ said as “moominoona”. Make the stop.
- Bouncing a Saakin Ta. Ta is not a Qalqalah letter: نُسِفَتْ ends cleanly, with no echo.
- Missing the middle Qalqalah. يَبْحَثُ and يَسْتَبْدِلْ have a Saakin Ba in the middle that still needs a light bounce.
A Five-Minute Practice Plan
- Minute 1: the Hamzah Saakinah group.
- Minute 2: the Qalqalah groups.
- Minute 3: the six Saakin-Ta words, as two sets of three.
- Minute 4: spell يَسْتَفْتِحُوْنَ the joined way, then read it Rawan.
- Minute 5: read the Check Yourself line below.
Check Yourself
